Every gown we make is from silk dupion, the most widely known silk which has a "slub" (a thickened area of yarn) giving it a textured and highly lustrous appearance.  Silk dupion is ideal for making dresses for special occasions including brides' and bridesmaids' dresses, ball gowns and other formal attire.  Our aim at The Gown Box is to make a Christening gown you will love; a keepsake you and your child will treasure alongside memories of one of the earliest celebratory moments in your baby's life. 

• Natural

We make all our gowns from natural materials, with the best for your baby's delicate skin in mind.  While the outer is made from silk, the inner is soft cotton.  The materials we source are a mixture of new and high quality end-of-roll fabrics, sewn together using the highest quality threads.  We focus on the simple, classic style; your baby's Christening gown is designed to last and to be cherished over the years.  PLEASE NOTE:  as a natural fibre, there will be slight weave irregularities or colour variations between rolls of silk produced at different times.  This is characteristic of silk.

• Handmade in the U.K.

All our gowns are handmade.  We make each one on a made-to-order basis from our small premises in Essex, close to the edge of Suffolk.  All of our gowns start and finish here so we are in touch with the entire process.  In purchasing a gown from The Gown Box you will be helping support products designed and made in the U.K.

Key features

Made from lustrous silk and cotton helping to keep your baby cool throughout, each Christening gown features simple, delicate tucks/pleats, leading to a full skirt that drapes gently to the bottom.  On the back, three buttons allow for easy dressing and the skirt is left open (i.e. not sewn together) for easy holding of your baby so that your baby feels comfortable and secure and the gown drapes smoothly for photos as well!

Please note there will be characteristic weave irregularities or colour variations as are known to silk.

• Care instructions: Dry clean only (see below).  Not machine washable.  Do not iron.

• Material composition: Main 100% silk, Lining 100% cotton.

• Fully lined with silk/cotton for comfort against baby's delicate skin

• Long, draping skirt (70cm/27.5in from waist to hem)

• Short sleeves with a slight puff (12cm/4.5in) or long sleeves (23cm/9in)

• Made and dispatched from the U.K.

Gowns are available in the sizes shown.  We don't specify gowns for boys or girls; they are suitable for all!  The measurements shown on the size chart are body measurements.  They are average measurements for guidance to help you determine the size of gown right for your baby.  The size will correspond to your baby's measurements at the time of their Christening.  Please note, actual measurements may vary slightly.

Dry clean only

Every gown we make is dry clean only so you will need to arrange for your gown to be professionally cleaned after use to keep looking its best throughout storage.  Although we do not provide this service we can help you with how to best look after and store your gown.  Please view our pages on Garment Care and The Box for more information.
